A web application is similar to what you would expect to see in a desktop application. The advantage of a web application is that it is accesible from many different locations and it requires no software installation on the desktop. Web applications are accessed with a browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. The web now can deploy applications that contain destop-like functionality. A web application can contain menus and grids (like a spreadhseet) and other sophisticated interface elements. Below is an example of a well site tubing wear reporting application developed by GGN Solutions Inc. This application requires no desktop installation and runs within a browser. It contain menus, data grids, buttons, and calendar date pickers as well as other user interface elements. The application is highly secure and requires an authenticated logon. The reports generated by the application are full colour and rendered as PDF files (see image 2.) allowing the user to save them, print them or email them to a second party.
