How much does a website cost? PDF Print E-mail
This is probably the most asked question we get! It would be nice if there was a simple answer to this one, but there isn't.
It would be a bit like asking how much does a house cost? What kind of house?
Ok we are not trying to be evasive here, but be clear that much of the price confusion on websites is out there because you hear offers like:
  • 3 web pages for $X  (what is on each web page?)
  • Complete webhosting and your web page for $X/month  (What are you getting?)
  • Business card site for $X (Is this useful?)
There are several parts to getting a website:
  1. Your domain name (domain names are never really purchased outright they are leased on a first come, first served basis for a specified period).
  2. Your web hosting (where your site is hosted and what kind of package you pay for)
  3. The website itself.
The truth is that 1 and 2 are cheap because they are generic and mass marketed so your real cost will be on 3 for the simple reason that making a website is labor intensive. Time = money!

For that reason, the how much will it cost question is directly related to what you are putting together for you website. You should know:
  • Why am I doing a website in the first place?
  • How much content will there be on the website.
  • What about functional elements of the website eg.
    • Calendars / Schedules
    • Directories
    • Email list management and newsletters
    • Maps
    • E-commerce (online store)
  • Will I be able to modify the website content myself?
So the bottom line is, assess your needs first, then you can get a reasonable estimate on cost.
You should be able to sit down with your web company and talk about your needs before you sign up.
